About Pablo

Pablo has always aspired to be a Rock Historian and a Cultural Anthropologist. Pop culture, music, leadership, marketing and social media, organizational development, and higher education are his obsessions.  The combination of these obsessions defines this blog. Pablo studies students, teaches leadership, researches pop culture, watches a lot of reality TV, owns an incredible amount of music, listens to (and supports) NPR, advocates for the effective and safe use of social media…and loves his family, New York City, Mickey Mouse, his students, the UConn Huskies, and all New York teams especially the Yankees, Knicks and Giants.

Pablo was most recently the Associate Dean of Students at a major public, 4-year, research-one university and was responsible for the campus life initiatives including the entire student activities and organizations area, which works with over 940 clubs and organizations including all fraternities, sororities, and cooperative houses.  Pablo also oversaw the staff of the community engagement/service learning office on campus and served as the advisor to student government, Mortar Board national senior honor society, and the student organizations’ presidents council.  Pablo is particularly proud of the leadership initiatives, which included the 4-year leadership experience as well as a learning community, leadership classes, retreats, workshops, individual OD consultation, and a leadership library.

Pablo has been working in campus life since 1987.  Pablo worked at the University of Connecticut where he also received both his bachelor’s as well as his Master’s degrees. Pablo has been active with the Indiana Student Affairs Association and the National Collaborative on Hazing Research and Prevention; and in the community, Pablo is a board member and the immediate past president of the Lafayette Crisis Center Foundation Board, an instructor with Junior Achievement, a member of the Drug-free Coalition of Tippecanoe County and the Mortar Board Alumni Chapter, and a volunteer with Lafayette Urban Ministries and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Center.

Pablo Malavenda has been considered an expert in social media, marketing, and networking since 2005 having presented across the nation at numerous schools, universities and professional meetings including most of the Big 10 universities and at the NASPA national convention, the Big Ten Commissioner’s meeting, Mortar Board National Conference, and the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Conference.  Pablo has been featured in state-wide media, the Chronicle for Higher Education, Delta Magazine, Christian Science Monitor and on ESPN’s Sport Center and Outside the Lines, and was published in Student Health 101. Pablo continues to speak, consult and work with nonprofit agencies and currently serves as the executive assistant for social media at the Lafayette Urban Ministry.

In his free time, Pablo enjoys reading, mountain biking, music, working out, cooking, and is somewhat of a Mickey Mouse fanatic.  Pablo also has fun hanging out with his son, Maximilian, his daughter, Zoe, and his wife, Kristin.
